You could even use it for turn games.Ĭross platform implies there are at least 2 machines of different nature (PC+console or PC+phone), but the type of link between the two is not specified, it could be local or online. For PC, it usually means multiple machines connected in a local area network because split/shared screen multiplayer games are so rare on PC, but the term is still technically correct for single machine shared/split screen (the players are in the same place). Local multiplayer means the players are in the same place. I believe Steam added this category recently.

It is very common on consoles but it is very rare on PC. Shared screen usually means the game is played by multiple people on one single machine (there are exceptions, i know at least one : Screen Cheat). Multiplayer does not convey any information regarding the game rules nor the technical requirements : it is an overarching term that contains all the other. It doesn't make any sense because you are trying to assign a very specific meaning to a generic term. Just search for yourself, you will see that =) There's more as "Spliscreen" and yada yada that is included in one of those tags, I mean if you have "Splitscreen" that means you doesn't need internet connection to play. "Coop" - Online Coop that requires internet connecton to play. "Local Coop" - LAN Coop mode, you just need to connect with the LAN party. "Multiplayer" - Online Versus that requires internet connection to play. "Single Player" - Solo player that doesn't need internet connection to play. You will see all games with "Multiplayer" are games with Online Versus, as the same with "Coop", all games with Online Coop.įor sure, there are only 4 Official Tags.

I'm proving that by just searching a game/DLC with those tags. As the same as "Coop", or any of it's variations, means Online Coop. In Steam Language, "Multiplayer" or of its variations means Online Versus. In case you search for games with "Coop" and find a game that you can't play Online Coop that means Devs will implement that or they wonrgly put the tag there. Also check the "sort by tags" options to the right of the page and see the specific tag for online multiplayer and online coop.

Just click the multiplayer tag in the game's page and see some of the game sin the list not matching your criterias. Multiplayer is the generic term that covers all types of multiplayer modes.Ĭoop is a generic term that covers all types of cooperative play. To prove that, you will find "Multiplayer", "multi-player", "Multi Player", "Multi-Player" all those kind of tags, all the same ♥♥♥♥, all created by Players. In Valve's Tags, I mean, official tags, "Multiplayer" means Versus and "Coop" means Online Coop. PS.: There is repetitive tags, because PLAYERS add those tags. This is how Steam Store works with the Tag and you can check that out by just searching for "Multiplayer" and check all games that will appear will have Versus mode.

If the game has "Local Coop", obvously means this game has LAN Coop. Any game with "Coop" means that game has ONLINE Coop. In Steam Store, any game with "Multiplayer" means that game has Versus mode. The hierarchical status of these tags is not shown on the store page. It's more an issue about the Steam store organisation. I have to admit though : there is a good argument for the presence of both terms next to each other to be confusing enough that someone could believe there is something more to the meaning. There is a specific tag for online multiplayer and online coop : it's just how the tag system works in the steam store. Multiplayer and Coop do not imply anything about network connectivity : they are generic terms.
